Tips for Self-Care After Therapy

February 27, 2023

Self-care is one of the most important things that help keep our minds, bodies, and souls healthy. Going to a counselor can also play a role in self-care, but sometimes the weight of therapy can hit harder than the actual therapy session. Let’s chat about tips for self-care after therapy.

Get Physical

Your body is a temple created by you. What you put into it, you will get out of it. Your body needs physical exercise to help with brain health, to release endorphins, and to help reduce the anxiety after therapy sessions. You can help manage that after-therapy hangover by taking a walk, riding your bike, or even dancing in the moonlight.

Keep a Journal

A penny for your thoughts? Journaling is a great way to help control your feelings and mood. Write down those thoughts that still occupy your mind. If you feel you left some thoughts out at your last session, also write those down, and share them with your therapist at your next visit. Remember that journaling can help with depression and anxiety, reduce stress, and organize the thoughts you have.

Do Something that Makes You Happy

Congratulations! You made it through another session of therapy. It isn’t always easy talking to another person about your thoughts, feelings, and moods, but you did it, and you deserve a treat for that! Go out and do something that makes you happy. Maybe get lunch at your favorite spot, take a hike at a beautiful park, or relax at home and read a good book. You deserve something that will put a smile on your face.

Even though a therapy session can be on the heavy side, don’t let your mental and physical health decline because of it. Self-care after therapy comes in the form of exercising your feelings, your physical body, and your thoughts. In the end, therapy is worth the effort you put into it. It is okay if your therapy session is too much for you to handle; that is a part of life. You are growing as an individual with each session. Keep up the great work.
