3 Ways to Strengthen Your Marriage

September 24, 2021

Deciding to unite two lives in marriage is a beautiful promise of commitment, friendship, and love. It’s important to know that after the vows have been said and the thank you letters are sent, there is continuous work to be done to maintain a fulfilling relationship. Continue reading for tips to strengthen your marriage.

Never Stop Dating

Marriage can lead you and your partner finding yourselves in a routine. Between work and appointments, much of our lives are scheduled out and set in stone. To keep spontaneity and excitement alive, set aside “date night” time. Whether you make a reservation at your favorite restaurant, pour a glass of wine while flipping through your wedding photos, or cook a new recipe at home, any form of purposeful connection will reignite that spark and remind you why you made this commitment to one another.

Communication Is Key

It’s important for both parties to feel there is an open line of communication in the marriage. Being emotionally available and reacting calmly when communicating will invite your partner to state their thoughts clearly and honestly. Remember, keeping your verbal communication to “I” statements will ensure clear communication and keep confusion at bay.

The second part of communication is listening. Actively listening minimizes the chances of misunderstandings and conflicts. Reflecting on your partner’s feelings and thoughts before reacting will ensure any concerns are accurately heard and not misconstrued. Listening attentively helps both you and your partner gain a deeper understanding of each other and work towards a solution you are both comfortable with.

Practicing Gratitude

Expressing gratitude is a meaningful way to strengthen your relationship. Many believe this is done verbally and forget it can be expressed through our actions as well. Here are a few ways you can practice gratitude in your relationship:

  • Making Time: Setting aside time to pamper your partner is a great way to show appreciation.  Plan an activity they love to do or book a romantic getaway to spend quality time with your spouse.
  • Dividing Housework: After a long day at work, its instinctual to head towards the couch and kick your feet up. Instead, spend ten minutes completing a job around the house. Whether its vacuuming or finishing up the laundry, your partner will appreciate the effort.
  • Physical Intimacy: We naturally respond positively to any sort of physical touch by our loved ones. Whether you embrace your partner in a hug, kiss their forehead, or massage their shoulders, all types of positive and loving physical intimacy are great ways to show appreciation and gratitude.
