Every age group comes with its own set of challenges, from toddlers to teens and young adults, and when your child is in need of counseling, you want the best counseling for their individual needs. We understand that young adults have different needs, desires, and challenges than younger children, and that’s why we offer both children’s therapy and adolescent counseling services. We believe in helping children work through their issues, create a better understanding of themselves, and make overcoming future challenges easier by equipping young adults with the tools they need to understand and confront their individual challenges themselves.
At The International Center for the Attainment of Love and Joy, we believe that love is a powerful tool that can be used to give each person strength to build the life they want. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to help everyone we see, including young adults, find unconditional love within and around themselves so that they can be prepared for anything life throws their way. Young adults have so many new challenges every day, from self-discovery to self-acceptance, small decisions to life-altering decisions, and many adolescent youth would benefit from some emotional and mental support through this trying period.
Confronting the Challenges of Young Adulthood
The late teens and early twenties encompass some of life’s greatest challenges. With very little experience and perhaps an even smaller understanding of who they are or want to be, young adults are asked to make life-changing decisions. They’re asked to choose their futures, pick their paths, and forge ahead as individuals with pre-set goals, life plans, and the mentality of someone who knows exactly what they want and exactly how to get it. Unfortunately, none of these things comes easy to many young adults. Instead, some struggle to understand what they want from life; who they want to be on a very basic level, as well as in the long-term; how they can deal with the stress of making small decisions, let alone the large decisions they’ll need to make in the near future; and how to deal with the social expectations of today’s youth.
Confronting the individual challenges of young adults takes experience and practice, and it always changes. Young adults each have different challenges depending on who they are, what they’ve experienced, and who they want to grow to be, and we make it our goal to understand and help young adults answer any questions they’re struggling to answer, get through any challenges they can’t overcome on their own, and help them see and obtain a future they want.
Confronting Societal Expectations of Young Adults
The social expectations of young adults are constantly changing, but there are some things that are almost always the same. Young adults suffer from social anxieties that many adults have been able to confront and overcome, with or without the help of a psychiatrist. For young adults who find social expectations or social stresses particularly draining or challenging, an adolescent psychologist may be exactly what’s needed to help create a space of comfortable and open conversation about the challenges of young adulthood.
Young adults often struggle with body image and self-esteem issues, gender identity and expectations, making decisions regarding their futures, sexuality, employment and income, and confronting the social expectations of other young adults. Young adults can be discouraged and challenged by any or all of these obstacles, sometimes having personal challenges that are uninvolved with any of the more common social anxieties and pressures. However, the combination of any social expectations and personal expectations or issues can leave any young adult feeling lost, trapped, and alone, just waiting for someone to talk to them and help them through this difficult stage.
Benefits of Individual Young Adult Therapy
In addition to helping young adults through the pressures of social expectations and the demands of their age group, we are able to provide counseling that helps young adults work through challenges that any individual can experience at any time. Young adults may be more at risk to face these challenges and issues because of social expectations, and they can also be affected by personal challenges that leave them wondering how to navigate challenges that deal with:
- Family Issues
- Dangerous Coping Mechanisms, such as drugs or alcohol
- Traumatic Experiences
